Targeted Mentoring Projects
Regional Projects
The Mentoring and Capacity Building Initiative is focussed on youth mentoring projects in communities with high levels of disadvantage where there are high concentrations of young people isolated by social and economic status. By supporting youth mentoring more vulnerable young people benefit from the support provided by quality programs.
Targeted Programs
These projects target and engage diverse groups of young people, linking them into further education, training and employment.
Through a competitive grants round support has been provided to twelve Targeted Projects over three years (2009-2011). Under the MCBI are all developing different youth mentoring models targeted to specific priority groups and disadvantaged areas.

The Bridge Youth Services - Young Parent's Mentoring Program
Target Areas: Greater Shepparton and Mitchell Local Government Areas.

Emerald Centre for Hope and Outreach Inc - Beyond All Expectations Mentoring Project of ECHO
Target Areas: Casey, Cardinia and Yarra Ranges Local Government Areas.
Target Group Age Range: 15 – 18 years old
A mentoring program to reconnect disconnected and at-risk young people with their community, school, further education and training or employment. Beyond All Expectations builds resilience, self awareness, accredited skills and knowledge in preparation for work and the world 'Beyond' school with experiences in the real workplace environment.

RMIT University - Linking Young People with Employment and Training (LYPET) Project
Target Areas: Whittlesea and Darebin Local Government Areas.
Target Group Age Range: 15 – 25 years old
A one on one mentoring model that matches volunteers from the community with young people who have faced barriers in transitioning from school into further education and/or employment, and as a result have become disengaged. To build confidence, the program also delivers a life skills/peer mentoring model for young people who are not ready to enter a one on one mentoring relationship.

Barwon Youth - Geelong Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Project
Target Areas: Greater Geelong Local Government Area.
Target Group Age Range: 12 – 18 years old
BBBS of Geelong, auspiced by Barwon Youth is a one to one mentoring program based on the simplicity and power of friendship. It provides leadership, direction and support to young people who may be experiencing personal difficulties by matching them with a positive adult role model.

Carers Victoria - Young Carers Mentoring Project
Target Areas: Melbourne, Moonee Valley, Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Melton, Wyndham and Hobsons Bay Local Government Areas.
Target Group Age Range: 12 - 18 years old
The Young Carers Mentoring project facilitates a one on one community based mentoring project for young carers living in Melbourne's west. Young carers are young people who live with or support someone who are aged, have a chronic illness, disability, mental illness or substance dependency.

Mallee Accommodation and Support Program Incorporated (MASP) - Mildura Youth Mentoring Project
Target Areas: Mildura and Swan Hill Local Government Areas.
Target Group Age Range: 15 – 18 years old
The Kokoda Youth Mentoring Program is a 12-month program designed to provide local disengaged young people from the Out of Home Care system to reconnect with the community. This will be achieved by providing ongoing mentoring with members of the local businesses community.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Victoria - Going the Distance Mentoring Project
Target Areas: Brimbank and Moonee Valley Local Government Areas.
Target Group Age Range: 12 – 25 years old
Going the Distance mentoring program matches disengaged young people with a volunteer mentor for 12 months to assist them to re-connect with the wider community.

Jindi Woraback Youth Mentoring Program
Target Areas: Yarra Ranges Local Government Areas.
Target Group Age Range: 12 – 25 years old
Jindi Worabak youth mentoring project provides one to one community based and group mentoring options for mentors and young people who live, work or study in the Shire of Yarra Ranges and need additional support, friendship, skill and personal development.

Strathbogie Shire Council - Making Links Mentoring Project
Target Areas: Strathbogie and Greater Shepparton Local Government Areas.
Target Group Age Range: 15 – 25 years old
Making Links targets young people who have a disability who are at risk of disengaging, and assists them to explore options for employment, education and community participation. Making Links empowers young people who have a disability to achieve their goals, hopes and dreams by facilitating meaningful connections with their local communities through mentoring.

Baimbridge College, auspiced by Community Connections VIC - Standing Tall Mentoring Program
Target Areas: Southern Grampians Local Government Area.
Target Group Age Range: 12 – 18 years old
Standing Tall is a school based early intervention program which supports one-to-one relationships between members of the community and students in a school setting who are at risk of not taking full advantage of the educational opportunities offered.

Melton Shire Council - Melton Youth Mentoring Project
Target Areas: Melton Local Government Area.
Target Group Age Range: 12 – 18 years old
The Melton Youth Mentoring Project provides disconnected and vulnerable young people between the ages of 12 and 18 with an adult mentor to share recreational activities, fun and friendship. The program aims to develop the self-confidence and resilience of socially isolated young people; to expand their educational and vocational possibilities; and to strengthen their connection to family and community.

Regional Coordination Projects
The Office for Youth and the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust have a strong partnership to help build the capacity of communities and develop innovative ways of helping young people. Each partner provides funding to three regions in the state for youth mentoring regional coordination. Through the funded community organisations greater coordination and linkages within communities and across mentoring programs are built, the quality of youth mentoring is strengthened and the capacity of organisations supporting young people through mentoring is increased.
