Examples of community strengthening

Community strengthening strategies have been in place for many years in a number of countries, but only in the last decade have there been rigorous attempts to observe and analyse the impacts of these strategies. International and local research on community strengthening highlights a consistent set of characteristics that are usually present in successful strategies.

The Department of Planning and Community Development has embedded these principles within the design of all its policies and programs. Successful community strengthening initiatives are highlighted further though the Demonstration Projects and through projects funded through Victorian Community Support Grants.

Community strengthening strategies are not complicated and include many traditional areas of community life, including:

  • supporting volunteering;
  • being active (e.g. sport, recreation, the arts, life long learning);
  • having people to turn to for support; and
  • government at the local level working together with communities to coordinate its investment in social infrastructure.

    Web Site Updates

    DPCD's websites are progressively being updated to reflect the changes following the establishment of the department. This means you will continue to see some references to the Department for Victorian Communities (DVC) as changes are being made.
