Community Renewal

Community Renewal 1Community Renewal 2

Community Renewal is part of A Fairer Victoria, the Victorian Government’s $1.6 billion plan to address disadvantage and create opportunity.

Community Renewal brings different parts of government, community organisations and local residents together to set priorities and take action to revitalise the places where they live, work, learn and play.

The government is investing $11.5 million from the Community Support Fund into a number of communities to help them get actively involved in improving the places they live.

Why do we need Community Renewal?

While Victoria’s economy continues to grow, some areas are at risk of being left behind. New, rapidly developing suburbs sit side by side with neighbourhoods that are run down, have falling employment and poor access to transport and services.

It is these communities that need some extra support to address the challenges they face and plan for a more positive future.

Community Renewal will work with declining urban neighbourhoods in rapidly changing suburbs without high concentrations of public housing. (A place based approach to community strengthening that focuses on neighbourhoods with high levels of public housing is the Department of Human Services’ link opens new window Neighbourhood Renewal).

The Community Renewal approach

Community Renewal brings residents, businesses, government and local organisations together to help transform their community into a place of opportunity and activity. It asks residents to make choices about how best to achieve:
  • Ongoing community participation in decision making.
  • New job and learning opportunities.
  • Increased volunteering and support for each other.
  • Better community facilities and safer, more attractive open spaces.
  • More involvement in cultural, recreational and sporting activities.
  • Improved feelings of safety and wellbeing.

Where is Community Renewal?

Community Renewal targets neighbourhoods of about 4,000 - 7,000 people in areas experiencing growth or decline. It is directed at communities facing a number of difficulties such as falling employment, poor access to services and run down community facilities.

It focuses on communities that are ready to work with government to change the outlook for their neighbourhood.
